What is Resilience?

Resilience is the capacity to recover fully from acute stressors, to carry on in the face of chronic difficulties: To regain one’s balance quickly after losing it. Such capacity requires optimism, balance, sustainability, determination, diversity, flexibility, and connectedness.

The expectation of a positive outcome and a focus on the most hopeful aspects of a situation.

Becoming and staying resilient is dependent upon both individual and environmental factors, and as such, understanding resilience and cultivating it at a number of different levels in society is vital.
